This is the image I entered into the Western Districts Camera Clubs' competition last September. It was taken at a portrait weekend workshop we did with Bob Cook from Studio Eleven Photography.

So Bob deserves to share the trophy that now sits proudly in my office: first place in Projected Images section.

Antarctica photos - done!!

Posted by Sandy Smith on February 21, 2011 at 11:35 PM Comments comments (0)

At long last! I have just completed posting an edited selection of the photos I took in Antarctica in December! It was a fantastic trip! There was so much more to photograph than I had imagined. What's more, although we are not allowed to get closer than 5 metres to the wildlife, they don't know that! If you simply sit on the snow, an inquisitive penguin or two are sure to come closer, give you a quick glance, then continue on their way. And for those creatures a little further away, there's ...

Antarctica Days 5 & 6

Posted by Sandy Smith on February 6, 2011 at 4:50 AM Comments comments (0)

At last, a few more folders of photos are up! Not many penguins I'm afraid as our landings for these days were curtailed by icy conditions (day 5) and biting winds (day 6). We should have visited the Ukrainian base of Vernadsky (formerly the British Faraday base) but there was too much ice for the 100 of us to travel by zodiac across the ice. However, no amount of ice was going to stop the Vernadsky base crew from making it out to us: we had their Christmas delivery!! I think they would have ...

At last - another folder of photos from Antarctica. I had intended it to cover several days but who can delete cute penguin photos!! These 72 photos only cover half a day! I hope I can steel myself to do better in the next folder!

I have just uploaded the first folder of photos from my Antarctic trip. I hope you like them! More to follow.

I've done my best with identifying the birds but I'm not a birder, so any corrections will be gratefully received!

Christmas in Antarctica!

Just returned from an amazing trip to Antarctica!

From Ushuaia, on the southern tip of South America, we travelled on board the M/V Polar Star across the Drake Passage to the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. The scenery was truly spectacular and the wildlife abundant. Penguins everywhere showing no sign of concern about the human visitors (the red jacketed striders - or waddlers, as the case may be!). The rule is: no going closer than 5 metres to the wild...
